Romeo and Juliet: A Vampire and Werewolf Love Story Page 12

Shock crossed Benvolio’s face. Utter shock.

I turned to the Capulets and yelled, “The hate that is among us needs to stop!” I walked over to the taxi and took Juliet out of the back seat. She flopped over my shoulder and I carried her out to the open.

People gasped as they saw that Juliet wasn’t moving. They knew she wasn’t dead because her body would have disappeared. They didn’t know what to make of it so they looked on in silence.

I tenderly held Juliet in my arms. I was displaying that I loved this woman. I stepped out into the middle of the street where the two sides had separated themselves. Directly in harm’s way from my kin, I laid Juliet before her family in the middle of the street. And directly in harm’s way from Juliet’s kin, I placed myself. I then turned and faced my family. “You think you took one of them! What you took was one of mine! She was my heart! My life! You took her!”

I turned and faced the Capulets, and then I stared at Prince Escalus and Paris, who were high upon their perch. “And we, we took one of yours!” I yelled. “An eye for an eye. Is this not now...over? I am Romeo, of the House of Montague, and with the heart of the wolf within me, the wisest heart in the universe, I say: End this war! End it, and end it now! Spill no more blood. For the sake of all who live in Verona, hear my pleas for love and peace! Make Verona a peaceful place for us, for all of us.”

Still, no one said anything, neither did they put down their silver rapiers, their silver stakes. Tlves.hey weren’t getting it. I was furious with them. Did they not see?

I turned and faced the two opposing sides, trading off who I addressed. “Tonight, the fighting stops. Tonight, there needs to be no more blood spilled. Juliet didn’t deserve this. She didn’t hate. She was all about hope, and perseverance. Most of all, she was the embodiment of love.”

I turned and faced the Capulets. I fell to my knees and held Juliet in my arms. “Tonight,” I said. “Tonight, you can have one of theirs. I throw myself on your mercy if you will let my blood be the price for peace between us. You can do whatever you want with my lifeless body.”

I lifted the vial out from my pocket and I held up Mary’s Blessing, which had enough serum to take me to Juliet. I looked out to my family and cried out, “Why must it come to this? Why!” I lifted the vial to my lips and I downed the serum. My father cried out, but he did not come to me.

I leaned down and gently kissed Juliet’s lips. I sat up, waiting for the serum to hit.

Soon, it began to take effect. I sat on my butt and laid Juliet’s body in my lap. I held her tightly in my arms. I would never let her go. As long I had consciousness, I would hold her always.

Suddenly, I felt a peace come over my body. Everything began to darken, and the shadows reached out to my consciousness, drawing me in to its velvety comfort. Yes, Mary’s Blessing was doing her job. I laid my head back slowly on the street and I looked at Juliet’s body, enduring the soft taking by Mary’s Blessing that would bring me to her. Juliet was lying beside me on the street. I could see her face, luminous and beautiful under the street lamps. That was all I knew was her. Juliet! She was my last conscious thought. Then everything, including my senses, withdrew from all that I had ever known and faded to black…
